Overview

As a Data Center Technician (DCT) at Microsoft, you will deploy, maintain, troubleshoot, and decommission the hardware that supports our cloud services. You will stage and install equipment, diagnose faults, replace components, and complete hardware upgrades and refreshes in line with standard procedures.

You will join Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team, which supports services including Azure, Microsoft 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Bing. This role offers opportunities to deepen your technical skills, learn from experienced colleagues, and support other technicians as you grow.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more. We work with a growth mindset and build an inclusive culture grounded in respect, integrity, and accountability.

Responsibilities

Stage, set up, and deploy datacenter hardware in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues, identify root causes, and replace faulty components while minimising disruption.

Complete post-deployment quality checks, verifying that grounding, staging, labelling, and cabling meet safety and deployment standards and planned Network Design Tasks.

Decommission hardware and carry out straightforward changes and refreshes, such as memory upgrades and rebuilds, following established procedures.

Report and escalate incidents to technician leads, datacenter operations management, or engineering specialists as appropriate.

Help other technicians complete challenging tasks and share knowledge across the team.

Complete required training and learn from experienced technicians through hands-on work.

Contribute to team meetings, communicate work status, and collaborate to resolve issues.

Take ownership of the quality and completeness of your work, while following security, data-handling, and safety procedures.

Embody Microsoft’s culture and values.

Required Qualifications

Completed secondary education, GED, apprenticeship, vocational qualification, or equivalent practical experience, with knowledge of computer hardware and components.

Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting hardware issues, including identifying root causes.

Experience deploying, upgrading, or decommissioning hardware.

Valid driver’s licence, as travel between sites may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.

Relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, Server+, or Network+, or Basic Structured Cabling (BSC).

Background Check Requirements

This role requires the ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements. The successful candidate must pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
